Give infielders practice at properly judging and recovering short hops.
Baseballs (6-8)
Base/Throw-downs
Gloves
In partners, position players 15-20 feet apart.
The feeder throws the ball just short of the infielder's feet.
The infielder fields the short hop, applies the tag and flips the ball to the side.
The feeder must throw the ball with some velocity just out of the reach of the infielder.
The infielder must stay low to the ground keeping his head behind the ball.
The key to this drill is keeping the infielders hands extended, and as the ball is approaching, cushion the ball and apply the tag.
Vary the lengths of the short hops and move the ball from side to side.
Another, more simplified version of this drill is the Tag Drill.
