Objective

  • To effectively practice blocking and receiving motion in one drill.

Equipment

  • Full catcher's gear is recommended
  • Bat

Description

  • By a series of signals, the coach will direct the catcher to:
    • block to the left, right, or straight on
    • throw out runner left side, right side, or straight on
    • frame a pitch to the left, right, or straight on
  • Signals are as follows:
    • Pointing up, up and left, or up and right will cue the catcher to do a throwing motion towards the gesture.
    • Pointing straight at the catcher or to his left or right will cue the catcher to frame towards where the coach is pointing.
    • Pointing down, down and left, or down and right will cue the catcher to block towards the gesture.

Tips

  • The catcher should begin in the ready position and the coach should allow the catcher to return to a neutral catching position after every movement.
  • As soon as the catcher begins to physically lag the drill should be stopped as a rest is needed. With this in mind this drill is somewhat of a conditioning drill. The progression is basically to increase the length of sets over time.
