Objective

  • To learn to slide to a ball and pick it up and make an accurate throw to home plate.

Equipment

  • Full catcher's gear is recommended.
  • Baseballs

Description

  • From a squatting position behind the plate the catcher will slide and pick up the ball in one motion, plant their feet and make an accurate throw to home plate.
  • A coach will toss balls in various locations around foul territory, simulating a pass ball or wild pitch.

Tips

  • Teach catchers to slide on their left knee with their right leg extended in front of them. As catcher picks up the ball, he plants the extended right leg, getting squared up to throw to the plate
  • (THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS PICKING UP THE BALL).
The slide should be timed so it ends at the exact time the ball is reached.
The back foot must be planted, creating balance for a good throw
  • A catcher who is doing this drill for the first time should practice the slide on its own.
