Objective

  • Besides keeping pitchers sharp and maintaining arm strength, bullpen workouts provide a great opportunity for players to work pitch location as well as learn and understand the concept of making release-point adjustments.

Equipment

  • Catcher's Gear
  • Baseballs (3 - 4)
  • Pitcher's Mound

Description

  • Depending on when or how often a player throws during any given week should determine his/her bullpen workouts.
  • Format:
    • 10 Fastballs
    • 16 Fastball, Changeup
    • 16 Fastball, Slider / Curve
    • 2 Hitters
  • For each set above, allow to work from the set position for the first half, then work the last half from the wind-up.

Tips

  • Locating pitches simply means throwing the ball to a specific target. Many pitchers assume that location pertains only to the fastball. Coaches should stress to their players that all pitches, including off-speed, should be located.
  • Throw "flat-ground" bullpens (no mound)
  • Modify the distance between the catcher and pitcher (move the catcher in front of the plate if he/she is experiencing control problems).
