This is a great drill for giving players a lot of quality swings, however, requires some sort of screen for safety.
Equipment
Baseballs (10-15)
Screen/Fence
Bat
Description
The coach/pitcher is positioned on a chair or bucket behind an L-Screen approximately 6-10 feet away from the hitter.
The pitcher lobs the ball at an appropriate speed into the hitter (working all areas of the hitting zone).
After hitters have had 10-15 quality swings, rotate them into the field to help gather balls.
A very good variation of this drill is to mark balls with different colored circles and have hitters yell out which color they saw after hitting the ball (see video 2). This makes hitters really focus in on every pitch.
Tips
Since the pitcher is so close to the hitter during this drill, make sure the pitcher remains completely behind the screen throughout the entire delivery (don't be afraid to throw on a helmet).
Avoid throwing to all areas of the hitting zone during a hitter's at bat. Try to work only 1 or 2 specific areas at one time (work away for an at bat then try to work inside the next time the hitter comes up).
To practice hitting curveballs, feeder can lob every other ball using higher arc and more top spin (see video 2).
Have one or two hitters on deck warming up to go in once the player at the plate is done.
Make sure the hitter is not lunging towards the ball. To avoid this, try and throw the ball with little or no arc.
