Objective

  • The purpose of this drill is to get players (outfielders) to practice proper fielding mechanics when reacting to a ground ball hit in their general direction.
  • This drill is also for players to practice getting good angles on balls hit to them (knowing when to try and cut a ball off or when to get back on something that is hit hard).

Equipment

  • Gloves
  • Baseballs (10 - 12)
  • Fungo (optional)
  • Any field is fine but an actual outfield is the best.

Description

  • The player's job is to simply track down the ball using proper outfielding technique.
  • After fielders retrieved their baseball, they throw the ball to the shagger then run to the back of the line.
  • Start with balls hit to player's left, then right, then straight at them.

Tips

  • Timing is everything. The purpose of this drill is to practice footwork and get good angles to the position of the ball.
  • Remind players to round the ball if they have time. This means getting their body in front of the ball and coming through it if they get the chance on a slow roller.
