Equipment
Catcher's Gear (0ptional)
10-12 baseballs
Description
Coach or partner throws balls that bounce before reaching the catcher, thus allowing him to block the balls with his equipment (do not catch the balls)
Tips
A proper blocking position is outlined as follows:
Kneeling with knees comfortably spread in a ready position.
Glove hand between legs with free throwing hand behind glove.
Shoulders hunched forward turning the shoulders and chest to a concave position.
Arms should be in a bodybuilding, flexed position for maximum surface for contact.
HEAD DOWN!!
It is important that when a ball is in the air to one side or the other, the catcher's knees come in contact with the ground before the ball gets there. This will allow the catcher to properly square up his shoulders.
Different types of balls can be used. Spongy or tennis balls will make reception more difficult as it is more likely for the ball to bounce out of the catcher's hand if concentration levels are not high.
Incorporate blocking and or throwing into receiving drills on a verbal cue.
