Objective

  • Improve players' footwork and reaction time.
  • Give players practice at fielding balls hit to their left and right.
  • Emphasize working with "angles."

Equipment

  • Gloves
  • 20-30 Baseballs
  • Ball bucket
  • 3-10 Cones

Description

  • Position players in a single line facing the coach (middle cone). Note, more lines can be formed if there is more than one coach.
  • Place two other cones on the left and right side of the players and slightly behind the middle one.
  • After each catch, players place the balls in a pile to the side.

Tips

  • Start by throwing balls to players' left (video 1), then right (video 2), then alternate throws (video 3).
  • Emphasize dropping back to cut the ball off (this is the reason for placing the side cones further back).
  • Balls do not have to be thrown hard for this drill. Again, the emphasis should be placed on catching the ball properly.
  • As players get better, the coach can back up, increase the width of the cones, and throw harder.
